Face your fear of powerlessness. If you're worried about a potential disaster, ask yourself what's the worst that can happen. Get a clear picture in your mind of this tragedy. What would you do if it occurred? Don't suppress your fear. Consider what options you have instead of worrying, and make concrete plans for action. This will transform paralyzed worry into active con-

cern.

Beware of the notion that you need worry as a motivator. Some people believe they need to worry about car accidents or they will start to drive recklessly, that they need to worry about AIDS or they will do unsafe sex, that they need to worry about being fired from their jobs or they will slack off. Stop. You're treating yourself like a mule that you have to whip to keep on track. You're expending as much energy in self punishment as in achievement. Instead, find enjoyment in driving, in safe sex, and in your job and let enjoyment be your motivator. Recognize that there are aspects of life over which you have little control aging for instance. So why worry about it? It's wiser to treat such inevitabilities like the weather. Accept it and go on to other things.

In the essay "Golden Day" Robert Burdette wrote, "There are two days a week about which and upon which I never worry. Two carefree days kept sacredly free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is yesterday and the other is tomorrow." These lines became famous because they ring so true. Whether you inhibit your life with worry or choose to live unhesitatingly in the present is up to you.
